Teenage Therapy FAQs
-
One or both parents/caregivers join the start of the first session to provide background information such as family and developmental history and any relevant medical details. This is also an opportunity to discuss their reasons for attending therapy. If the young person feels comfortable, parents are encouraged to give them some one-to-one time with me towards the end of the session.
-
No. After the first session, ongoing therapy is one-to-one with the adolescent. Parents/caregivers attend only for short review meetings- usually halfway through and at the end of the process.
-
Teenage sessions are 50 minutes.
-
Sessions are weekly, as consistency is important. Where possible, it is helpful to commit to a block of 10 sessions to allow progress to be made.
-
Yes. What the young person shares is confidential and will not be discussed with parents/caregivers, unless it falls outside the limits of confidentiality or the young person requests that I share it. Parents are encouraged not to press the young person for details after sessions, as this can affect trust and the therapeutic relationship.
